2-Pyrrolidone

2-pyrrolidinone, English name 2-pyrrolidinone, CAS No. 616-45-5, is colorless to yellowish liquid or crystal.

2-pyrrolidone forms metal salts with alkali metals, alkoxy metals or alkaline hydroxides. It can be hydrolyzed to 4-aminobutyric acid in the presence of strong acid. It reacts with acetic anhydride to form N-acetylpyrrolidone. N-hydroxymethyl-2-pyrrolidone was obtained by reacting with paraformaldehyde under the catalysis of alkali.

In terms of solubility, 2-pyrrolidone can be mixed with water, alcohol and ether. Most of the light damages, such as benzene, ethyl acetate and carbon disulfide, are miscible and difficult to dissolve in petroleum ether.

2-pyrrolidone is used as a solvent for synthetic resin, plasticizer, polymerization agent, printing ink, insecticide, pesticide, polyol, iodine, etc. It is also an organic synthesis intermediate, which is used as a raw material for the manufacture of nylon 4, polyvinylpyrrolidone, nylon 4 and piracetam.
